Selection on wing allometry in Drosophila melanogaster.

Five bivariate distributions of wing dimensions of Drosophila melanogaster were measured, in flies 1) subjected to four defined environmental regimes during development, 2) taken directly from nature in seven U.S. states, 3) selected in ten populations for change in wing form, and 4) sampled from 21 long inbred wild-type lines. Environmental stresses during development altered both wing size an...

Complex constraints on allometry revealed by artificial selection on the wing of Drosophila melanogaster.

Precise exponential scaling with size is a fundamental aspect of phenotypic variation. These allometric power laws are often invariant across taxa and have long been hypothesized to reflect developmental constraints. Here we test this hypothesis by investigating the evolutionary potential of an allometric scaling relationship in drosophilid wing shape that is nearly invariant across 111 species...

Not Censorship But Selection

T HERE IS A N A MUS ING WORD GAME with which many of you are familiar in which the object is to trace an action, a point of view, or a characteristic through the gamut of its connotations from the most to the least acceptable. The point of the game is that the most admirable aspect of the characteristic is always assigned by the speaker to himself, whereas the least attractive aspect is taken t...

Hand injuries on artificial ski slope.

50 consecutive patients with injuries due to skiing on an artificial ski slope were seen in our emergency department over a 16-month period; 76% of these involved the hand or wrist. 52.5% of hand lesions were fractures and only one-third of the first ray injuries were sprains of the ulnar aspect of the MP joint. These data significantly differ from those known for skiing on snow.

The allometry of patch selection in ruminants.

An axiomatic feature of food consumption by animals is that intake rate and prey abundance are positively related. While this has been demonstrated rigorously for large herbivores, it is apparent from patch selection trials that grazers paradoxically tend to prefer short, sparse swards to tall, dense swards. Indeed, migratory herbivores often shift from areas of high to low sward biomass during...
